Library workshops provide solid academic foundation for grad students

Kansas State University Libraries is presenting a new series of free workshops, "The Library and Your Research," designed to provide graduate students with a solid foundation for a successful academic experience. The hour-long workshops will be throughout the semester at 1:30 p.m. in 407 Hale Library.

Effective Literature Reviews
1:30 p.m. Monday, Sept. 8
This workshop will review the process of putting together a literature review for an article, thesis or dissertation. Topics will include why a literature review is important, how to select and evaluate articles, and how to organize the review.

Understanding RefWorks
1:30 p.m. Monday, Sept. 15
This workshop is designed to help you get started and maximize using RefWorks as your citation management tool. Learn how to set up an account, how to import citations from databases and manually, how to create references cited/bibliographies, how to share citations with others and more. Bring to class your laptop to work on your personal account.

Making Data Work For You
1:30 p.m. Monday, Oct. 6
We all have data — whether it's text, digital photos or spreadsheets full of numbers. There are some very practical things that everyone can do to make their data safer and more organized. We will cover the fundamentals of data management including: file naming and organization conventions, best practices for storage and backup, and developing a good documentation strategy to promote future file usability.

The Library and Your Research: Using Citation Management Tools
1:30 p.m. Monday, Oct. 20
Citation managers can save you time and effort when citing articles, creating bibliographies and retrieving previously cited articles. This class will cover citation managers other than RefWorks, including introductions to Zotero, Mendeley and EndNote. We will highlight the pros and cons of these additional tools, along with a brief demonstration of each.

Know Your CopyRights!
1:30 p.m. Monday, Nov. 3
Don't get caught unprepared using others' works or in managing the copyright of your own research or publications. This workshop will briefly cover managing/registering the copyright of your electronic theses, dissertations, and reports, determining if something is in the public domain, making a fair use determination, permission requests, and searching for items with creative commons licenses.

Preparing Your ETDR, or electronic theses, dissertations, and reports
1:30 p.m. Monday, Nov. 17
Are you preparing to graduate next semester? Want a head start on your thesis or dissertation? This workshop is just for you. The emphasis will be on preparing your electronic thesis, dissertation, or report and using the prescribed template, which meets the Graduate School's formatting requirements. Use of special features found in Word and some citation management and copyright will be covered. Don't wait until the last minute to learn the ropes on submitting your hard work to K-REx.
