Attend diversity learning events Nov. 12-13

Attend one or all of the diversity learning events jointly offered by the 10th annual Diversity Summit and fifth annual Institute for Student Learning Assessment on Nov. 12-13 in the K-State Student Union. The events — except meals — are free for K-State faculty and staff. See the full schedule of events. Highlighted events and topics include:

  • Fostering Diversity Learning through Teaching — Alma Clayton-Pedersen, Association of American Colleges and Universities senior scholar and CEO of Emeritus Consulting Group, will be this year's keynote speaker. Clayton-Pederson will deliver the keynote address from noon to 1 p.m. Nov. 13. For a more in-depth discussion on teaching practices that promote diversity learning, attend the dinner from 6:30-8 p.m. Nov. 12. The dinner requires preregistration and is $25 to attend.
        
  • Wounded Warriors: Overcoming Adversity — Retired Col. Greg Gadson served in the U.S. Army for more than 26 years. Gadson is a passionate advocate for wounded warriors, veterans and those with disabilities. He will speak on the importance of helping our wounded veterans make a meaningful return to civilian life from 8:10-9:05 a.m. Nov. 13.
     
  • Diversity Learning Sessions — Breakout sessions on defining and assessing diversity learning within disciplines will be from 9:15-11:45 Nov. 13.

  • A Walk through Multicultural History at K-State — From the papers of the first African-American K-State graduate to letters between Booker T. Washington and the K-State president; from 1970s feminist publications to a collection of LGBT Native American authors, attendees will get a glimpse of multicultural history at K-State through rare and unique materials. This session will be from 5-6 p.m. Nov. 12 and again from 11-11:45 a.m. Nov. 13. 

  • Micro-aggressions Workshops: The workshops will help participants understand what micro-aggressions are, how harmful their cumulative effects are, and how we might avoid unintentionally exhibiting these behaviors which contribute to a hostile and unsupportive climate for diverse people. These workshops will be from 2-3:15 p.m. and 3:30-4:45 p.m. Nov. 12.

To attend one or more of these events, please register for the Institute/Diversity Summit by Nov. 1. Registration without meals is free for K-State faculty and staff. Preregistration is encouraged even if you can only make it to one or two sessions. See the conference home page for more information.
