Fostering unity and support for Asian-American and international students, the Asian-American Student Union is celebrating Asian-American Awareness Month at Kansas State University with a week of events from March 12-16.
To kick off the week, Monday, March 12, will be We Are AASU day. All members of the organization will be wearing their organization's T-shirts in an effort to promote the organization, showcase its new logo and recruit new members.
Tuesday, March 13, will be AsiaNality Day. Students across campus are invited to dress in clothing to represent their nationality or culture.
On Wednesday, March 14, the Asian-American Student Union will host Taste of Asia, an opportunity for students to try food from different Asian countries, at the International Student Center from 7-9 p.m. Table games and prizes will be available. Students will also be invited to pinpoint their nationality on a world map. Taste of Asia is free and open to the public.
The final activity of the week will be Friday, March 16, with a talent show from 7-9 p.m. in the K-State Student Union Ballroom. Along with several students who will be presenting their talents, the show will feature Kansas City rapper Staff Johnson, a K-State alumnus and former member of Asian-American Student Union. This event is free and open to the public.
"The talent show allows for Asian students to be themselves and share an evening of appreciation for the things they love to do," said Pang Her, senior in mass communications, Manhattan, and president of the Asian-American Student Union.
The mission of Asian-American Student Union is to foster unity, support, awareness and visibility of Asian and Asian-American cultures, and to create an atmosphere that promotes and teaches the equality of diverse people. Established in 1991, the union has grown from 16 members to nearly 65 members in the past year.
The next Asian-American Student Union meeting is at 8 p.m. Wednesday, March 14, in Room 208 of the Union. Following meetings are scheduled for every other Wednesday, with officer elections on April 18.
