Friday First-Gen Focus
Today's film features K-State alumnus, Chuck Allen. Allen is the founder and executive director of the Urban Scholastic Center in Kansas City, Kansas. This segment is from the College of Education's "A Walk in My Shoes: First Generation Students," produced by Rusty Earl, the college's video producer.
Some of the key qualities of the center's approach also are represented in K-State's First Scholars Program and related efforts. For example, current first-generation students are invited to participate in the Wildcats First Institute, which begins after spring break.
According to Jared Meitler of the Academic and Career Information Center, "Wildcats First Institute is a fun and interactive series of workshops designed to connect students with campus resources and help them develop skills needed for college success. Topics include academic success, financial literacy, professional development, leading in a global society, and health and wellness."
If you know a student who could benefit from participation, please encourage them to RSVP to Meitler at jmeitler@k-state.edu. The Wildcats First Institute is a program of the Suder Foundation, with oversight and leadership provided by the Academic and Career Information Center.
