Beach Museum to host film showings today
The Beach Museum of Art will host two film showings beginning at 7 p.m. today.
The first, "Proteus," is an animated documentary that explores the 19th century's engagement with the under sea world through science, technology, painting, poetry and myth. The central figure of the film is biologist and artist Ernst Haeckel, who found in the depths of the sea an ecstatic and visionary fusion of science and art.
The second film, "West Bank Story," is a witty and musically enjoyable take-off on "West Side Story" that features hapless lovers from Palestinian and Israeli families who run rival fast-food restaurants. It won an Academy Award in 2006 for best live-action short. The film uses humor to help viewers take a serious look at ethnic hatred.
After each film there will be a question and answer session with Yuval Ron, who composed the original score for both films.
