Important Fair Labor Standards Act changes and training information

The U.S. Department of Labor has issued new salary requirements that all employers must follow in determining which positions have eligibility for the Fair Labor Standards Act, or FLSA, exemption from overtime.
Changes to the regulations
The exemption from overtime eligibility has been based, in part, on a current minimum salary of $23,660 per year — or $455 per week. Effective Dec. 1, this salary level will be increased to $47,476 — or $913 per week. Employees affected by this change will receive notification of their exemption status and any associated changes this week.
Resources for supervisors
Human Capital Services encourages supervisors to have one-to-one conversations with employees affected by these changes. Supervisors can find a series of resources in assisting with these changes online.
Additionally, supervisors are strongly encouraged to complete online FLSA Basics training. While material in the training is geared toward supervisors, any employee is welcome to complete the training.
Training sessions for affected employees
Informational training sessions — FLSA Basics: Its Impact On You, WHR201 — will be offered to directly-affected employees and supervisors during the week of Nov. 14 to assist with the transition of some employees migrating from an exempt status to non-exempt status. HCS liaisons are encouraged to join an informational training session, Session 0003, that is offered via Zoom from 10-11 a.m. Friday, Nov. 18. To participate in the Zoom session, please enroll through Employee Self Service in HRIS. Zoom details will be emailed to participants after enrollment is completed in HRIS. Questions regarding enrollment for this session may be directed to Learning and Development at learning-develop-hr@k-state.edu.
There are two informational training sessions available for employees and supervisors directly affected on the Manhattan campus:
- Session 0001: 1:30-2:30 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 15, in K-State Student Union Flint Hills Room.
- Session 0002: 10-11 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 17, in K-State Student Union Big 12 Room.
