Kansas Board of Regents Feb. 15 meeting university updates

The monthly Kansas Board of Regents meeting on Feb. 15 included some items related to Kansas State University.
Admissions
Pat Bosco, vice president for student life and dean of students, presented as part of a panel discussing factors affecting admissions at Regents institutions, barriers to enrollment and reasons students choose to attend certain institutions. Bosco reported:
- Qualified admissions has been positive for K-State. Average ACT scores among first-time freshmen have increased to 25.1 for 2016-2017 and the freshman-to-sophomore retention rate increased to 85.1 percent in fall 2015.
- In 2016, Kansas State University enrolled a record 3,651 multicultural students.
- K-State continues to be the No. 1 choice among high school seniors.
University Research Grants
Peter Dorhout, vice president for research, and Tammy Beckham, dean of the College of Veterinary Medicine, provided annual progress reports to the Regents about global food systems and the Veterinary Health Center. The two areas receive targeted state appropriations.
Dorhout discussed current projects at the Biosecurity Research Institute as well as research into food-borne pathogens and other threats to plants, animals and humans.
Beckham reported to the Regents about how the college is using its University Research Grants to create additional jobs, economic value in the state and also improving its rankings. Beckham also discussed the college's three-year strategic plan.
