Exhibition of K-State art professor Jason Scuilla's work opens at Beach Museum of Art today
"Porta Magica: Jason Scuilla," by 2017 Friends of the Beach Museum of Art gift print artist Jason Scuilla, is on view March 14 through July 1 at the Marianna Kistler Beach Museum of Art.
Each year museum supporters commission a printmaker or photographer to produce a limited edition print for sale to the public. The program, which began in 1934, recognizes outstanding contemporary artists associated with Kansas.
Scuilla lives in Manhattan where he serves as associate professor and head of the printmaking program in the art department at K-State. An American artist of Italian descent, he has been drawn to his ancestors' country and traveled there frequently to study and create prints. Monumental fragments of Italian sculpture inspire his recent work in this medium. Dramatic compositions rendered with a pictorial economy and a deadpan sense of humor raise questions about humankind's relationship with mortality and the ancient past.
The 2017 gift print by Scuilla is available for purchase from March 14. Friends at the annual $100 level and above receive a 25 percent discount. For more information, contact Robin Lonborg at 785-532-7718 or rlonborg@k-state.edu. For information about supporting the museum as a Friend, call 785-532-7718 or visit beach.k-state.edu.
Scuilla also will present an artist talk at 5:30 p.m. Thursday, April 6, at the Beach Museum of Art's UMB Theater.
Scuilla will talk about his work and innovative printmaking technique. Reception to follow.
