LSAMP program coordinator Brenee King named 2016-2017 KAWSE Award recipient

Submitted by Chardie Baird

Brenee King, Louis Stokes Alliance for Minority Participation, or LSAMP, program coordinator is the 2016-2017 recipient of the KAWSE Award. The KAWSE Award honors exceptional efforts undertaken by a K-State faculty or staff member to enrich girls' and women's lives in STEM disciplines.

King will be recognized with an engraved plaque at the Women of Distinction Recognition Ceremony on Sept. 7 and will receive a $500 award.

King has participated in programs that support partnerships across programs. She runs the Research Immersion: Pathways to STEM program that trains early career students to participate in STEM research and pursue careers in STEM. She has mentored and trained more than 30 community college and K-State students. Every K-State student who has participated in this program has remained in their STEM field. She also is developing a project to collaborate with several academic institutions in the U.S. to improve department culture for underrepresented minority faculty in the geosciences. She also has contributed to the KAWSE Office's GROW, EXCITE, SUCCEED and ADVANCE programs by helping to develop and run KAWSE programming for postdoctoral researchers.
