Geographer discusses climate change and food security at Süleyman Demirel University
Submitted by John Harrington Jr
John Harrington Jr., professor of geography, gave an invited presentation to members of the Faculty of Agriculture at Süleyman Demirel University May 17 in Isparta, Turkey. Harrington's talk, "Climate Change and Food Security," emphasized the global and regional trend toward more extreme weather events and the need to develop food production systems that will be resilient as future heat waves, droughts and floods have a greater impact on food production and delivery systems.
As a guest of Hayati Köknaroğlu in the animal science department at Süleyman Demirel University, Harrington and Köknaroğlu are working together on a multiyear effort to address the current and future impacts of extreme heat events on livestock production systems in Turkey. The goal is to identify a more sustainable future. Funding for Harrington's travel to Turkey came from the Scientific and Technological Research Council of Turkey.
