Kansas Board of Regents May 17 meeting university updates

The monthly Kansas Board of Regents meeting on May 17 included some items related to Kansas State University.

Introductions

Jack Ayres, senior in chemical engineering at K-State and president of the Student Governing Association, will be the chair of Students' Advisory Committee for the coming year. Brian Lindshield, associate professor of food, nutrition, dietetics and health, will be the chair of the Council of Faculty Senate Presidents.

Academic affairs

The Regents approved Kansas State University's request to offer a bachelor of science degree in biomedical engineering.

Fiscal affairs

The Regents approved Johnson County Research Triangle Authority FY 2018 budgets for K-State Olathe, the University of Kansas and the University of Kansas Medical Center.

President Richard Myers spoke to the Regents about fee proposals for FY 2018. The Regents also received FY 2018 fee proposals from the other Regents universities. Tuition proposals will be added after a final budget is approved by the state legislature.

The Regents approved capital improvement requests for FY 2019 and Five-Year Plans for K-State and the other Regents universities.

Discussion items

  • Title IX: The Regents heard from the Council of Presidents about the progress of the Title IX Workgroup the board created at its May 2016 meeting.
  • Credit hours: The Regents received information about policies for credit hour requirements for baccalaureate degrees and information on how to further the implementation of credit for prior learning for former members of the military.

The Regents also received a legislative update and elected Regent Dave Murfin as chair of the board for 2017-18 and Regent Dennis Mullin as vice chair.
