New play reading in Nichols Wednesday night
Submitted by Jennifer Vellenga
Theater faculty Jennifer Vellenga will direct a world premiere off-Broadway production of "Fashionistas" by Janet Allard Aug. 8-18 at Urban Stages in New York City. An informal reading of the play by K-State students and faculty will be at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, May 2, in Nichols Theater. The reading is free and open to the public.
The House of Narcissus is gearing up for the fashion show of the season, but life on the runway can be treacherous. An activist plots to destroy the show, the supermodels can’t find their shoes. Echo is in love with Narcissus, and Narcissus is consumed by the one thing he can never obtain: himself. In this world of unrequited love, insatiable desire and fabulous clothes, what is the cost of falling in love with illusion? A high-fashion adaptation of the classic story of Echo and Narcissus.
Vellenga’s creative endeavor is supported by a College of Arts and Sciences New Faculty Initiative Award, a Provost’s Academic Excellence Award and philanthropic donations. She will be joined by theater and dance faculty Kathy Voecks , Dana Pinkston, Dwight Tolar and Julie Pentz. A small group of K-State theater students will be traveling to New York to observe the new play development process. Faculty, alumni and friends of the K-State theater program who are interested in supporting student travel should contact Tracy Robinson at the KSU Foundation, 785-532-7568 or tracyr@found.ksu.edu.
