Celebrate Constitution Day with the Kansas Court of Appeals
Submitted by Daralyn Gordon Arata
Tuesday, Sept. 19, is Kansas State University's celebration of Constitution Day in Forum Hall at the K-State Student Union.
Kansas Court of Appeal Judges Melissa Taylor Standridge, Stephen D. Hill and Kim R. Schroeder will form a three-Judge panel to hear six cases from across the state. This is an incredible opportunity for K-Staters to see the Kansas court system in action. The unrest in the world brings our freedoms into sharper focus and the legislative impasse in our Capitol illustrates how important it is for citizens to understand our system of government and be active participants.
In order to make this year's celebration successful, we need members of our campus community to come and observe the judges and attorneys. Three cases will be heard beginning at 9 a.m. and three cases will be argued beginning at 1:30 p.m. These are real cases argued by attorneys from all over the state. Attendees will be able to watch the attorneys argue their cases before the panel of judges and have an opportunity to ask questions between cases.
Two local attorneys will participate in the afternoon session: William J. Bahr, Arthur-Green LLP; and P. Bernard Irvine, Morrison, Frost, Olsen, Irvine and Schartz, LLP. Irvine is an adjunct professor in the agricultural economics department and teaches Agricultural Law I.
Stay as long as you want or just stop by to see your state court in action. The case summaries are available on the pre-law website. Hope to see you there!
