First International Symposium on Innovative Teaching and Learning is coming to K-State
The first International Symposium on Innovative Teaching and Learning is coming to K-State Sept. 26 and 27. A delegation from Jilin University in China will arrive to participate and next year, Jilin will host the symposium.
The Confucius Institute at K-State along with the Teaching and Learning Center have collaborated to offer a two-day symposium filled with presentations, workshops and posters:
• Michael Wesch, associate professor, sociology, anthropology and social work, will present the opening session, "Life 101: Lessons from Students."
• Members from the Jilin group will give presentations and workshops on topics about innovative teaching practices.
• Steve Dandaneau, vice provost for undergraduate studies, will share the programs at K-State designed to help first-gen students succeed.
• Mick Charney, associate professor of architecture, will guide participants through a workshop, "A Beautiful Mind: Critical Thinking in the Visual Arts."
• A panel of Chinese graduate students will share their experiences with the group in another session.
• Todd Easton, 2017-2018 Coffman chair for distinguished teaching scholars, will present "Lecture-based Tutoring — an Active Learning Teaching Technique."
• Don Saucier, associate professor of psychological sciences, will share "Engagement Begins with You: Trickle-Down Engagement in College Teaching and Learning."
Two evening events are planned for the symposium:
• Participants will take a tour of Wefald Hall with Derek Jackson, associate vice president and director of housing and dining services at K-State, where they will enjoy a meal in the state-of-the-art dining facility on campus.
• Lazy T Ranch will host the group for a barbecue, poetry reading by Ron Wilson, director of the Huck Boyd Institute, and entertainment from both Chinese and U.S. cultures.
