Highlights from the Dec. 12 Faculty Senate meeting

These are the highlights from the Dec. 12 Faculty Senate meeting. Minutes become available on the Faculty Senate website as they are approved.

Guest: Provost April Mason visited with senators regarding follow up to KSUnite, budget modernization and enrollment management.

Standing committee and Student Senate reports: 

  • Student Senate: The Tuition and Fees Strategies committee meetings have begun. The Diversity and Inclusion Advisory committee met with Adrian Rodriguez, the new associate vice president for student life of diversity and multicultural student affairs.
  • Academic Affairs: A lengthy discussion occurred surrounding the consequences of lowering bachelor's degrees to 120 hours to meet the Board of Regents' requirements, including the overall effect on general education. A new degree program from the College of Education was approved and will move forward to the Board of Regents for approval. The retake and incomplete policies, as found in section F of the university handbook, are under review with the Committee on Academic Policies and Procedures.
  • Faculty Affairs: Proposed changes to the university handbook, section E regarding sabbatical leave is still under review in committee. SGA has reached out to engage FAC regarding diversity and inclusion. 
  • Professional Staff Affairs: At their December meeting they continued to discuss communication to their constituents. They reviewed possible enhancements programs for professional staff and what data to gather. They continue to seek involvement with Total Rewards.      
  • Technology, FSCOT: Shappee provided an overview of recent Microsoft Office 365 updates.  Their committee is providing input regarding overall IT policy flow to determine how Faculty Senate can be involved strategically.
  • University Planning, FSCOUP: Littrell spoke about the library resolution, which came to Faculty Senate in June and was deferred to their committee. The resolution will be revised and come forward out of FSCOUP. Budget modernization was a topic of conversation at their last meeting.  

New business

  • An honorary degree candidate was approved.
  • A suggested weapons policy optional syllabus statement was endorsed.
