Professional Development Workshop: Communicate with Your Military-Connected Students
Submitted by Katelin Christianer-Donkers
Faculty and staff on all K-State campuses are invited to register and attend a free event designed to foster better communication and understanding of K-State's military-connected students.
The professional development workshop Communicate with Your Military-Connected Students will take place from 1-4 p.m. Monday, April 16, in 21 Bluemont Hall. Event organizer and College of Education academic advisor Kelly Briggs explained the concept behind the event.
"The goal is to present on topics that will assist with administrative or educational best practices when working with the military connected community," Briggs said. "Military-connected students will share their experiences and provide important insights with the overarching goal of providing faculty and staff with the resources and solution for common struggles of military-connected students."
The workshop will allow faculty and staff to participate in three separate panel sessions that all revolve around communication in different situations that military-connected students face. These sessions include spouses and dependents, through the transition, and finally away from campus. The workshop will allow participants to choose up to two topics to learn about from a panel of varying military-connected students. These students will represent the different cohorts on campus, including, veterans, active duty, Reserve and National Guard, spouses, dependents, and online and distance students, as well as representatives from graduate and undergraduate degrees.
"The workshop provided a wonderful way for participants to learn about how military-connected students viewed and experienced the university environment," said Julie Hunt, academic programs coordinator for K-State Global Campus, who attended the event last year. "The presenters were willing to answer questions and openly shared the background stories that shaped their lives."
The event is co-hosted by the College of Education Military Initiative Committee, Military Student Services and Global Campus. Registration is available online.
