Mother-daughter Smart Fit Girls program open for new participants

Submitted by Kelsey Casey

Researchers in the food, nutrition, dietetics and health department are looking for sixth- through ninth-grade girls and their mothers/female caregivers who are interested in participating in Smart Fit Girls, a 10-week after-school strength training program.

Smart Fit Girls teaches adolescent girls how to love their bodies by embracing their own strength. During the program, girls and their female caregivers participate in exciting activities aimed at improving their self-esteem and body image, and are introduced to resistance training exercises in a fun, group environment.

The group meets from 5:45-7:45 p.m. on Thursdays and 1-3 p.m. Saturdays beginning Thursday, Jan. 31. Sessions will take place on the third floor of Lafene Health Center. Data collection will include a physical fitness assessment, surveys, height, weight, waist circumference and DEXA scans for both daughters and mothers.
