Immigration and LGBTQ activist speaks at 4 p.m. in the Wildcat Chamber
Submitted by Shireen Roshanravan
Please join FIRE at 4 p.m. Monday, April 15, in the Wildcat Chamber of the K-State Student Union, for a talk by Jennicent Gutiérrez, co-founder of Familia: Trans Queer Liberation Movement and community organizer for the direct action anti-deportation political formation #Not1More.
A transgender immigrant organizer from México, Gutiérrez made national headlines in the summer of 2015 when she interrupted President Obama at a White House Pride celebration, calling for an end to deportations and the release of all LGBTQ detainees in immigration detention centers. Her protest and ongoing activism expose the need to center the voices of trans women of color in both mainstream LGBTQ and immigration reform activism.
This event is co-sponsored by Feminists Igniting Resistance and Empowerment, the American ethnic studies department, the Dow Center for Multicultural and Community Studies, and the gender, women, and sexuality studies department.
