Advice website co-founders bring motivational message to campus in Oct. 22 presentation
Submitted by Communications and Marketing
The co-founders of the advice website, Everyone is Gay http://www.everyoneisgay.com, will discuss their work in a presentation at Kansas State University.
Kristin Russo and Dannielle Owens-Reid will present "Everyone is Gay" at 7 p.m. Monday, Oct. 22, in Forum Hall at the K-State Student Union. The event is free and the public is invited. It's sponsored by K-State Libraries, the Dow Center for Multicultural and Community Studies at Hale Library and the university's LGBT Resource Center.
Everyone is Gay started as an advice website for all, with an emphasis on lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer youth. Russo and Owens-Reid tour high school and college campuses nationwide to spread awareness and encourage change. Through an ever-growing online presence and outreach effort, Everyone Is Gay uses humor and honesty to support students and keep them laughing.
Kansas State University is one of 10 stops on the website's fall tour -- and one of the few stops in the Midwest made by the website co-founders since they started touring in fall 2011. Their first tour included stops at Bard, Harvard, University of Virginia, University of Tennessee and Stanford. The second tour, over spring and summer 2012, included visits to 20 colleges and high schools from Massachusetts to California.
"Since seeing Kristin and Dannielle at the SXSW Interactive Conference last March, I've been excited about the possibilities of bringing them to K-State," said Donna Ekart, communications coordinator for the K-State Libraries. "I think students will find them both entertaining and thought-provoking, and their core message of acceptance and change-making has so much in common with Kansas State University's Principles of Community. It will be a really fun evening for everyone."
During their presentations, Russo and Owens-Reid motivate students to become and remain informed and to take action to fight for equality, engaging audiences with insight and humor on an emotionally vulnerable subject.
