International Education Week being celebrated Nov. 12-16

Lectures by Noel Schulz and Marcelo Sabates will highlight International Education Week, Nov. 12-16.
International Education Week is a joint initiative of the U.S. departments of Education and State. First established in November 2000, the week celebrates the benefits of understanding the world around us so we can better communicate and collaborate with others from different cultures. The national theme this year is Striving for a Healthier Future Worldwide
Across our Kansas State University campuses our students will have opportunities to elevate their level of international engagement and become knowledgeable about the many international engagement opportunities available to them. It is through education and exchange that we become better collaborators, competitors and compassionate neighbors in this global society.
Office of international programs study abroad scholarships will be announced that week. Other events at the Manhattan campus include:
Monday, Nov. 12
7 p.m. — Community Cinema: "Solar Mamas," Town Hall at the Leadership Studies Building. Rafea lives in a small Jordanian village with four children and a husband eager to take a third wife. Learn how she and others are empowered to become solar-energy engineers to make their communities sustainable. Free and open to the public. A discussion of the film follows the screening. Sponsored by the School of Leadership Studies.
Tuesday, Nov. 13
All day — Fair trade sale in K-State Student Union courtyard.
9 a.m. to 1 p.m. — Office of international programs fair, first floor concourse near the food court at the K-State Student Union. Displays will include:
- International Coordinating Council
- Office of international programs
- Asian studies/international area studies
- International student and scholar services/International Buddies
- Faculty-led study abroad
- Study abroad office/study abroad mentors
- Friends of International Programs
- English language program
1-2 p.m. — Marcelo Sabates, interim associate provost for international programs, will speak about internationalization of campus in the Big 12 Room.
Wednesday, Nov. 14
All day — Fair trade sale in K-State Student Union courtyard.
Thursday, Nov. 15
11:45 a.m. — Friends of International Programs Vernon Lecture Luncheon at Holiday Inn at the Campus, 17th Street and Anderson Avenue. Buffet begins at 11:45 a.m. with lecture following at 12:15 p.m. Lecturer is Noel Schulz, K-State first lady, associate dean of engineering and Paslay professor of electrical and computer engineering. Schulz will discuss "Engineering in a Global Workplace including advancing Women in Engineering." Schulz is president of the IEEE Power & Energy Society, an international technical society with more than 29,000 members worldwide. In 2012 she will have visited six continents while attending meetings and conferences with PES members. In August, Schulz became the associate dean of research and graduate programs in the College of Engineering. Her academic home is the department of electrical and computer engineering, and her research area is computer applications and modeling of electric power systems.
7 p.m. — Artist Talk @ the Beach Museum of Art. Eames Demetrios carries the title Geographer at Large. He travels the world researching the history of a parallel reality, Kcymaerxthaere, and installing historic plaques at important sites. Free and open to the public.
The International Educator of the Year Award will be presented from 3:30-5 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 29, in the Hemisphere Room at Hale Library.
Presented each year by the office of international programs, the university's International Educator of the Year Award recognizes an individual who has made significant contributions to advancing international education at Kansas State University. One faculty, staff, administrator or other member of the K-State community is selected and will be honored for their major contributions and sustained commitment to advancing international education at K-State. The International Educator of the Year is recognized annually during International Education Week and is awarded a $1,000 honorarium.
