Rebecca 'R.J.' Steelsmith retires from Human Capital Services

Submitted by Diana McElwain

After more than 26 years of service, R.J. Steelsmith will retire from Kansas State University on Nov. 25. Steelsmith currently serves as a Benefits Specialist in Human Capital Services.

Steelsmith began her employment with the university on Aug. 23, 1994, as an office assistant IV in Personnel Services, now known as Human Capital Services. Steelsmith worked in the payroll area until the implementation of the Human Resource Information System, or HRIS, in 1995 when she accepted an acting position in the benefits unit. This role led to her longstanding career as a benefits specialist at K-State, overseeing health insurance benefits.

Before her state of Kansas position, Steelsmith worked at the K-State Student Union for more than 10 years spanning from 1983 to 1994.

Known for her outstanding customer service, Steelsmith has counseled hundreds of employees on their health insurance benefits the last 25 years. Her knowledge of health care as it relates to employees is paramount. She has always strived to make the open enrollment as successful as possible and has led the benefits fair in October every year. Steelsmith's knowledge in all areas of HCS and the impact on employees from hire to retirement have made her an invaluable resource.

Steelsmith has many hobbies and interests that will keep her busy after retirement such as camping, scrapbooking, reading and enjoying her family. Known as K-State's health insurance expert, Steelsmith's kindness, service and commitment to K-State will be greatly missed.

Please join us in wishing Steelsmith a happy retirement by sending retirement wishes via email to rjs@k-state.edu. Celebratory cards may also be sent to Human Capital Services by Nov. 18.
