English Language Program hosts Wildcat Conversations today

Submitted by Office of International Programs

The Office of International Program's English Language Program, or ELP, will host two sessions of Wildcat Conversations at 11:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. today, Wednesday, Nov. 11, as part of International Education Week 2020. Join students in K-State's English Language Program as they Zoom in from around the globe to share short presentations and engage in conversations about food, education and learning in the current online environment.

Contact ELP at elp@k-state.edu for the Zoom link to either session to participate.

One unit of the international programs office at K-State is the English Language Program. The program supports internationalization at K-State in various ways. Its mission is to prepare students for academic work, help in their transition to their degree programs, and support the university community through partnerships, special programming and cultural and English expertise. The ELP provides for the English Proficiency screening — in person and online — for international undergraduates, the SPEAK test for international graduate teaching assistants, and language proficiency interviews for J-1 scholars and researchers for support to get their immigration documents. The ELP is responsible for intensive English instruction, through multiple levels, especially for those students wanting to go on to degree work. Finally, ELP provides programs through grant sponsored and specialized short programs

While the reduced numbers of international students on campus hit ELP hard, staff members have pivoted to online modes for English proficiency screening — the WildCAT test — and intensive English instruction. This provides greater flexibility for students near and far from the campus. The ELP was also hit hard by the reduced number of sponsored grant programs intended for 2020 and early 2021. However, the ELP continues to seek and implement grant sponsored and specialized programs such as the State Department's Online Professional English Networking, or OPEN, program for groups of 25-30 Ethiopian civil servants to be delivered this spring. The ELP will be receiving new cohorts in summer 2021 of the Fulbright English for Graduate Students and CAPES — Brazilian teacher training. The ELP provides student and university programs online as well as face-to-face through testing, instruction and partnerships for grants and special programs supporting the internationalization at K-State.
