Office of Student Life welcomes two new coordinators
Following a search over the summer, the Office of Student Life has hired two new coordinators, Amber Shumway and Janelle Rieger. Shumway and Rieger's primary focus will be responding to student of concern referrals, which have grown significantly in the past few years.
Shumway joins the Office of Student Life team after serving as a community coordinator for Goodnow Hall since 2016. She will be working with students in the colleges of Engineering, Health and Human Sciences, Architecture, Planning & Design, and Arts and Sciences.
Rieger joins the team after a 14-year career teaching life sciences at Clay Center High School. Rieger will be working with students in the colleges of Arts and Sciences, Agriculture, Business Administration, Education and Veterinary Medicine.
Last academic year, 925 students of concern were referred to the Office of Student Life. Student of concern referrals are only a portion of students the office's staff work with each semester and does not include students directly connected with the office by others, student self-referrals or student absence verifications.
"We are excited to increase our efficiency and effectiveness in our ability to respond to student of concern referrals with the addition of the two coordinators," said Andy Thompson, director of the office of student life.
The coordinators also help process absence verification requests for the office, including both excused and verified absences, as well as COVID-19 absence notices to faculty.
K-State faculty, staff, students and community members are all able to submit a student of concern referral by stopping by the office in 201 Holton Hall, calling the office at 785-532-6432 or filing out the student of concern referral form on the website.
