Chad Schwartz receives TreanorHL Faculty Award
Chad Schwartz, associate professor of architecture in the College of Architecture, Planning & Design, was awarded the TreanorHL Faculty Award for 2022. This award recognizes outstanding efforts by faculty who involve the design profession in the education of students.
Schwartz joined the faculty in the fall of 2017 after serving for six years as an assistant professor at Southern Illinois University and eight years as a faculty associate at Arizona State University. He has taught extensively in the design studio, at both graduate and undergraduate levels, as well as in the building technology and structures sequences. In recent years, Schwartz has led a variety of studios centered on the design of complex, socially driven projects, encouraging the students to think carefully not just about what they are designing, but also about who they are designing for. These studios have been supported by experts in the field — both architectural and non-architectural — most notably in recent studios focused on the design of shelters and community family housing for survivors of domestic violence in Topeka and Phoenix.
Schwartz received his Master of Architecture in 2003 from Arizona State University and a Bachelor of Arts in architecture from the University of Illinois, Chicago in 2000. He is an NCARB-certified and licensed architect in Arizona, where he worked professionally for almost a decade before shifting to a full-time academic career.
At the end of 2016, Schwartz’s first book, "Introducing Architectural Tectonics: Exploring the Intersection of Design and Construction," was released by Routledge. His second book, "Situate, Manipulate, Fabricate: An Anthology of the Influences on Architectural Design and Production," was published in fall 2020. His current research builds on this line of thought, investigating the impacts of place on the design and construction of architecture, specifically looking at the work of the Sonoran Desert region of Arizona. This research agenda contributed to Schwartz being named the 2020-2023 Regnier faculty research chair in the College of Architecture, Planning & Design.
The TreanorHL Faculty Award is generously underwritten by the architecture, design and engineering firm. TreanorHL is a multidisciplinary firm with 10 offices throughout the United States, with two of them in Kansas.
