Craig B. Parker lectures at International Musicological Society Congress
Craig B. Parker, School of Music, Theatre, and Dance, presented his paper "Greek Elements in the Compositions of Alan Hovhaness," at the 21st Quinquennial Congress of the International Musicological Society in Athens, Greece, on Aug. 25.
Hovhaness, 1911-2000, was one of America's most prolific composers with 434 opus numbers, including 67 symphonies, 12 operas, six ballets, numerous documentary film scores and countless smaller works. In addition to his Armenian heritage, his compositions were influenced by his numerous international travels throughout Europe and Asia. Parker's paper dealt with Hovhaness's 17 compositions which incorporated elements of Greek music and culture.
Parker has previously presented his research at past International Musicological Society congresses in Belgium, Switzerland, Italy and Japan.
