Chance-Reay elected president of Domestic Science Club
Submitted by Michaeline Chance-Reay
Michaeline Chance-Reay, assistant professor of women's studies and curriculum and instruction, has been elected president of the K-State Domestic Science Club for the 2011-2012 academic year.
The club, founded in 1876, is one of the oldest on campus. At the time of its founding female professors and women from the community volunteered their homes and kitchens for the use of students majoring in domestic science -- the precursor of home economics, which is now human ecology -- as there were no campus laboratories with the proper equipment where they could practice the new skills they were learning.
First lady Nannie Foote Anderson, wife of then-president John Anderson, sometimes allowed the students to set the table, plan the menu and prepare a meal when special guests came to campus.
To learn more about the club and its history refer to "Land-Grant Ladies: Kansas State University Presidential Wives," as each first lady since Mrs. Anderson has been a contributing member. The club gives one scholarship each year to a human ecology major.
