Migette L. Kaup, professor of interior design in the College of Architecture, Planning & Design, has been recognized by Marquis Who's Who. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.
Kaup has established herself as a distinguished figure in interior design education and research in environmental gerontology. With a career that spans more than three decades, she has dedicated her professional journey to advancing the understanding and application of human-centered and evidence-based design philosophies. Her work primarily focuses on creating supportive environments for aging populations, particularly those with dementia. Kaup's approach to education involves integrating her extensive research into her teachings, enriching the learning experience for both design and non-design students.
Kaup's career began at Gossen Livingston PA in 1990, where her passion for creating impactful environments emerged. This drive propelled her to pursue advanced education and subsequently join The Ken Ebert Design Group focusing on professional design practice. She worked on numerous long-term care projects until 1999. Transitioning to academia, she assumed roles in teaching interior design and research in environmental gerontology. Her systems-thinking approach prepares future practitioners to address complex challenges in design, ensuring they are equipped to make meaningful contributions to the field.
Committed to professional excellence, Kaup holds certifications from NCIDQ and EDAC and actively engages in industry-related organizations such as the Interior Design Educators Council, which she served as president in 2017, the International Interior Design Association, the American Society of Interior Designers, the Gerontological Society of America, the Environmental Design Research Association, the National Council for Interior Design Qualifications, the Council for Interior Design Accreditation, and the Society for the Advancement of Gerontological Environments.
Before embarking on her professional journey, Kaup studied interior design at Kansas State University, where she earned a Bachelor of Science with cum laude honors in 1990. She graduated from K-State with a Master of Architecture degree, with honors, in 1994. Kaup subsequently attained a Doctor of Philosophy in architecture with an emphasis in environment-aging relationships from the School of Architecture and Urban Planning at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee in 2012. Her ongoing dedication to the field has been recognized through numerous awards, such as being named a fellow of the Gerontological Society of America in 2018 and Interior Design Educators Council in 2019.
Her current work is focused on developing an evidence-based environmental assessment tool for skilled care settings that can measure quality based on architectural and interior features. This collaborative research has been funded by the National Institutes of Health and the Alzheimer's Association. Kaup's leadership extends to the Resilient Aging Environments Network through the Center for Health Design, where she facilitates forward-thinking dialogue among senior living and design professionals.
