WellCAT One-Minute Survey to support student retention
Submitted by Division of Academic Success and Student Affairs
On Sunday, Sept. 15, K-State and the Division of Academic Success and Student Affairs will be distributing a new WellCat One-Minute Survey to all new first-year students. The survey is accessible through students' K-State email address or in Navigate.
Everyone who interacts with first-year students, and in particular, instructors of first-year classes, and staff who support first-year programs are encouraged to promote survey participation to their students.
The survey is designed to identify students who may need additional resources or referrals to support their university transition and belonging. The fall 2024 iteration of the survey consists of the following statements to which they respond yes or no:
- I want assistance in becoming involved on campus.
- I am consistently attending all of my classes (in-person and/or remotely).
- I am struggling in one or more classes.
- I have the course materials I need for all my classes.
- I am having technological difficulties in completing my coursework.
- I would like some support for my emotional well-being.
- I have a friend or group of friends at K-State.
- I sometimes feel alone or isolated because of my sexual orientation and/or gender identity.
- I sometimes feel alone or isolated because of my racial, ethnic, or cultural identity.
- I am experiencing financial distress.
- I know who my academic advisor is.
- I am considering not returning to K-State next semester.
- I have questions but I do not know who to ask for answers.
Completion of the WellCat One Minute Survey is a critical new component of the university's retention strategies to support student success. Campus teams will contact students who raise concerns in particular areas and provide additional support and resources.
Questions about the WellCAT One Minute Survey can be directed to Bill Watts, associate vice president for academic and career engagement.
