Submitted by Division of Communications and Marketing
The Alpha Upsilon chapter of Delta Sigma Phi fraternity came home from its national biennial convention with several honors, including the executive director's award, bestowed upon Ben Hopper, director in the Center for Student Involvement.
The executive director's award recognized Hopper's service to the local chapter, national fraternity and entire Greek community.
"Delta Sigma Phi at K-State is a great example of what a holistic fraternity experience should be because the chapter balances service, leadership, academics, intramurals and social involvement," Hopper said. "They are just one of the many outstanding fraternities and sororities at Kansas State."
In addition to Hopper's award, the chapter received the Pyramid of Excellence, which recognizes Alpha Upsilon as a national leader of Delta Sigma Phi chapters. The chapter also was recognized at the convention as the only chapter to earn a 100 percent score on submitted accreditation materials.
The following five Delta Sigma Phi students were initiated into the Order of the Sphinx, which recognizes outstanding undergraduates: Alex Bahr, senior in communication studies, McPherson; Trent Flagler, junior in construction science and management, Overland Park; Mario Garcia, junior in family studies and human services, Shawnee; Matt Mindrup, junior in biology, Hays; and Sam Edwards, senior in public relations, Olathe.
The chapter also received recognition for having an organizational GPA that was higher than the GPA for all other fraternities at K-State and for the university overall. Additionally, the chapter received an honorable mention for its engagement in community during the 2016-17 school year, when members volunteered an average of 72.36 hours.
"I am proud of these generous, service-oriented students, as well as others throughout the Greek community who have supported philanthropies by raising funds and volunteering their time," Hopper said. "Fraternity and sorority members are making a huge difference here and around the world, and they will continue to do amazing things."
