Accept the chaos
Trauma is chaotic. Case managers responding to a hurricane where there are multiple victims and intense suffering face an emotional storm. So does a friend visiting a grieving widow or a parent walking into the room of a heartbroken teenager. Chaos involves a lack of control in unpredictable circumstances. Chaos thrives in disorder and confusion.
Chaos challenges us to remain in contact with emotional Friends while keeping ourselves intact. A swirling tempest of emotions can be like an interstellar black hole pulling us into its destructive vortex. To be effective, we have to touch suffering without it overcoming us. What helps is to accept what we cannot change. |
