Prepare yourself
Although introduced at the Threshold, this skill is a good place to start in the moments before any meeting with Friends. Take a moment to relax. Calm yourself and allow any intruding thoughts from earlier in the day to evaporate. If you are a caseworker who has just met with a distraught client, drift away from the sadness you might have felt. “Downshift to neutral.” Begin turning your attention to the person you are about to meet with a fresh mind.
Of course, this can be very difficult to do. You might have to put yourself into motion while you clear the deck by going for a brief walk. The idea is to give ourselves as helpers fully to the person who is with us not the person who is no longer there. |
