Repeat one word phrase to encourage conversation
At some point, you might recognize that Friends are struggling to find words and feeling awkward with silence. Friends may need to lean on us for a moment. As we sit silently, we might repeat one word or phrase Friends have said. Then we wait for a response.

For example, a Friend makes a long statement and ends by saying, “She hates me. Always did and always will.” We respond, “Hates you?” This simple repetition demonstrates that we are listening, encourages Friends to continue, and helps us understand them better.

Instead of using one word, we could ask for clarification. “I’m a little confused by what you just said. Could you help me better understand what’s important to you.”

Like any effective skill, this kind of repetition can be overused.
