Stay focused
We should avoid distracting nonverbal behaviors or interruptions as we respond. These distractions include playing with one’s hair (or in my case, my beard), yawning, tapping a pencil, bouncing one leg up and down. We can also lose our focus by thinking more about how we are going to respond rather than really listening. Our attention can wander like wind-blown paper.

Some wandering is natural. We cannot stay focused 100 percent all the time. We can recognize when our minds begin to roam, however, and pull ourselves back to focus.
