Friends may see emotional expression as shameful
There is a time in grief when Friends have to let go and be confident in the support of those who care about them. They may continue to hold back, though. Friends may be self-critical of their feelings and fearful of expressing them. They might view crying or any display of strong emotions as signs of weakness and immaturity. A person in crisis, for example, may apologize for crying.
We all present a “face” to others when we are in public. This loss of face can be embarrassing and shameful. Men are especially critical of any emotion associated with weakness and may recoil at the thought of being dependent on someone. |
