Affirm success though follow-up
Depending on circumstances, our responsibility at this point may involve monitoring a Friend’s progress through phone calls or personal visits. For example, a father might meet weekly over lunch with his teenage daughter. A Red Cross Case Manager supervisor may contact a client one week after a disaster to see how he is adjusting and to discuss whether he needs additional assistance. We could clearly affirm any sign of strength displayed by Friends. Building confidence is important at the Transformation phase.

Setbacks can happen at any phase including Transform. The hurt can reemerge in new forms that send additional tremors in a person’s life as memories come flooding back. When that happens, we may find our relationship with Friends has returned to in an earlier phase.

This setback is not a sign of failure. The best advances may involve temporary retreats.
