“Truths” evolve
from observations
Second, not only did we learn about ourselves through direct experience,
we also formed beliefs by observing others. We formed conclusions,
for example, about what it means to be a man or a woman by observing
how our parents treated each other. We did something and then observed
the reactions of others to what we did. For example, a second grade
boy may pull the pigtails of the girl who sits in the desk in front
of him because he wants her attention and is curious about how
she might respond.
