We pay attention to (turn the spotlight on) what confirms our beliefs and ignores what contradicts them. If I believe I am stupid, for example, then I am more likely to pay attention to my mistakes and overlook my successes. Children who have this belief may notice every failure, big and little, while being blind to any kind of success they achieve.
