The aspects of ourselves that we cannot change vary in social desirability.
Keep
in mind that social desirability exists in other unchangeable
things about us. Sometimes there is a clash between the expectations
of others and what one’s heart urges us to do.
Let’s
say a child likes to play the piano and his father wants him to
play football. Or a mother who loves to cook has a
daughter who has little interest in preparing food. If both of
these children love their parents, they may feel sad for disappointing
them. Even so, what they enjoy doing is not something they can
deliberately change. |
