A specific idea a child identifies may seem to some adult listeners
as either unrealistic (“I’m going to be an astronaut!”)
or lack prestige (“I’m going to be a cheerleader!”).
How do you think adults often react to statements children
make about their future? Write in your journal one or more
typical adult reactions. What are some of the responses an
adult might make to a child who says, “When I grow up,
I’m going to be an astronaut!”
