Courage is willpower
Power begins by choosing to act toward a conscious goal.
Parents gain power by considering alternatives and their consequences, making decisions, and putting their plans into action. The birth of courage, therefore, can be found in the choice of acting. Without goals and values, the will to act can dissolve into indecision and powerlessness.

(See my book “Raising Kids with Courage: Eight Steps to Practical Heroism” for chapters on willpower and seven other qualities that relate to courage.)
