Dependence on rewards may foster an external locus of control
Second, there are rewards. A parent or teacher who depends on the use of rewards to achieve control over children undermines the self-respect of children by gradually leading them to conclude that being rewarded is the primary reason to behave properly. They conclude that being nice to one’s sister is the right thing to do because if they are not, they will not be rewarded. Like punishment, this form of guidance is also based on fear (fear of not getting something). Does this mean that all punishment and reward undermine self-respect?
