Why do such individuals respond instead of running away? They have deep values strengthened by an internal locus of control. To run away would be to be diminished, to lose self-respect. They often view their act of heroism as a freely chosen obligation. That’s why those who are recognized for their heroism uniformly hate to be called “heroes.”
