Self-respect is not self-preoccupation, self-gratification, or
selfish egocentrism. Self-respect is strengthened and elevated
when we make a real difference in the life of another person. We
are by birth social creatures. We are part of a social contract.
If I am hurt and need help, I hope that someone, even a stranger,
will respond. In a similar way, if someone is in need, I have an
obligation to respond. By giving something to each other, we both
elevate ourselves.
