Key ideas
1. Understand that the need for heroes exists throughout history and in all cultures.

Activity
In this lesson the emphasis is on examining heroism historically and cross culturally. Ask children to choose any nation in the world. Once they make their selection, their task is to research the culture and history of that country to identify a hero figure. The hero could be or could have been a real person or one based on mythology (though I would tend to emphasize real people who may have taken on some mythological overtones). Invite students to discuss why the hero image is so important throughout history across the world. Ask students to prepare a display or make a presentation on what they found.
