Key ideas
1. Notice adversity and opportunities for noble action.

Activity
Reexamine the case studies you selected. For each case, challenge children to identify the adversity the actor knew was present and had to be overcome. In some cases, you may have to guess. The emphasis here is not just on identifying the adversity, but what the actor knew and chose to address.

For example, Martin Luther King was determined to oppose racism nonviolently. He was well-aware of the suffering of African Americans and the harm racism caused our nation as a whole. He was also aware of the danger he and his family faced because of his activism.

Emphasize in your discussion that our awareness is like a radar screen. Some people walk through life ignoring opportunities for showing courage either on their own behalf or on the behalf of others. Why would someone do this? Why would someone ignore the bad things that are happening to others around them?
