Teaching and Learning Center to offer faculty development workshops this spring

Submitted by Kim Coy

The K-State Teaching and Learning Center is launching a series of monthly workshops designed to help faculty better support student learning with a scholarly approach to teaching.

The Scholarship of Teaching and Learning is a way to approach teaching from a scholarly perspective, including reflective thinking on classes, deliberate design for future classes, and collecting evidence to support changes. Students tend to learn more and be more engaged if faculty are engaged in the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning.

The workshop series is scheduled to begin Wednesday, Feb. 13, and will help faculty formalize research projects and learn new techniques for future projects. The workshop will be approximately two hours and will take place in 1092 College of Business Building.

The Feb. 13 workshop will focus on how to know if your students are learning and changes to be contemplated for the following year. In this workshop, faculty will clarify their ideas about teaching problems to solve or new things to try, and these ideas will form the nucleus of a new Scholarship of Teaching and Learning project. Faculty will leave this workshop with a reasonable and possible research question, as well as initial ideas toward a research design.

Eleanor Sayre, associate professor of physics, will lead this series in which participants will think about initial projects: clarify ideas, design publishable research projects, think about how projects support diverse learners, and plan for data collection.

Future workshop dates are March 28, April 16 and June 27 and topics include designing publishable projects, fostering inclusivity and equity in the classroom and planning fall research projects.
