Endy Lopes Kailer named Encompass Fellow for Leadership and Research Excellence
Endy Lopes Kailer, a doctoral student in the department of agronomy, has been selected as an Encompass Fellow by the American Society of Agronomy, or ASA, Crop Science Society of America, or CSSA, Soil Science Society of America, or SSSA, and Bayer Crop Science.
This prestigious fellowship recognizes graduate students and early-career scientists who demonstrate exceptional leadership, research excellence, and a strong commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion in agricultural science. With nearly 100 applicants competing for the fellowship, Kailer's nomination stood out due to her impactful leadership in DEI and impressive academic achievements.
Kailer's research focuses on exploring the use of soil microorganisms for climate change mitigation and improving soil health. Under the guidance of Charles W. Rice, university distinguished professor in the department of agronomy, she is advancing sustainable agricultural practices that build soil resilience while reducing environmental impacts.
Beyond her research, Kailer is a dedicated advocate for inclusivity in agriculture. She chairs the Professional Conduct and Anti-Harassment Work Group and serves as the DEI representative for the ASA-CSSA-SSSA Annual Meeting Program Planning Committee, supporting more than 4,000 attendees every year. Kailer also mentors undergraduate students through the K-State Research and Extension Research Fellowship program, which supports members of ethnic minority and underrepresented groups. Additionally, she has served on the Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Belonging Committee of the K-State Student Governing Association.
As an Encompass Fellow, Kailer will attend and present her research at the ASA-CSSA-SSSA annual meeting in San Antonio, Texas, from Nov. 10-13, and participate in a yearlong mentorship and professional development program sponsored by Bayer Crop Science.
"Congratulations to Endy on being selected for the 2024-25 Encompass Fellows Program, a national honor," said Raj Khosla, agronomy department head and professor. "Endy has set a shining example for her peers. Agronomy is proud of her and excited to see all the amazing things she will accomplish in the future."
