Winter is coming: Keeping you informed if inclement weather impacts our campuses
Submitted by the Division of Communications and Marketing
With winter officially starting Dec. 21, work is underway to make sure students, faculty and staff receive the latest information if inclement weather threatens safety, classes or operations on our Manhattan, Salina or Olathe campuses.
It is rare that the university cancels classes and modifies operations because of the weather, but the safety of students, faculty and staff is always K-State's first concern. The university also considers the effect weather-related decisions will have on classes and operations.
A decision to cancel classes or operate at a reduced capacity is made based on local weather for each campus location. Information from various university officials, including those in facilities responsible for treating and clearing roads, parking lots and sidewalks, is considered as part of any decision. Individual campuses may cancel classes or reduce operations based on the impact of weather conditions in their area.
How you'll find out if classes or operations are canceled or changed:
K-State Alerts, the university's emergency notification system, will notify you if a decision to cancel classes or modify operations is made. All students, faculty and staff are automatically enrolled in K-State Alerts email and text messages.
Alert notifications are also delivered through the Rave Guardian mobile app, and class cancellations and changes to university operations will be posted on the K-State homepage.
You are encouraged to familiarize yourself with K-State's inclement weather guidelines to know what to expect and do if severe weather affects our campuses.
Faculty members, please make plans if inclement weather hits and communicate your expectations to your students. When winter storms occur, students should contact their professors immediately if unable to safely attend class.
Supervisors, please review university and departmental policies and discuss expectations with your employees before winter weather occurs. Those employees who are deemed essential and will need to report in during a storm should be informed in advance.
