Help conserve campus energy and heat
Submitted by Division of Facilities
Due to the expected extreme cold temperatures in the coming days, natural gas providers serving the Manhattan campus may need to issue an Operational Flow Order, or OFO. This measure helps balance supply and demand to maintain the pipeline's integrity, ensuring safe and reliable system operation. If an OFO is issued, we request assistance from the campus community to help reduce our energy load.
Here are a few ideas to help conserve energy:
- Adjust the thermostat. Facilities controls the heat in the Central Steam Plant and the main campus buildings; stand-alone buildings, specifically on north campus, have individual heating systems. Consider turning down the thermostat a few degrees on these units. You can save up to 3% for each degree you turn your thermostat down. Use caution when doing this so you don't let it get too cool. That could lead to frozen pipes and cause even more problems.
- Make sure all windows and exterior openings are closed.
- If there are drafty areas under doors, consider putting a towel or blanket there to keep out as much cold air as possible.
- Keep curtains and blinds closed to help serve as an insulator.
- Wear a sweater or warmer clothing to minimize the chill.
If the heat is not working properly, please contact the Division of Facilities at 785-532-6389.
