Parker lectures on Igor Stravinsky in Lithuania
Craig B. Parker, music, delivered his paper "Stravinsky and the Los Angeles Music Festival" Sept. 7 at the "Sociocultural Crossroads and Borders: Musical Microhistories" conference in Vilnius, Lithuania. His lecture detailed Igor Stravinsky's frequent participation as a composer and as a conductor in one of America's most prominent mid-20th-century music festivals.
Held at the Lithuanian Academy of Music and Theatre, this conference was sponsored by the Lithuanian Music and Theatre Academy, the Lithuanian Composers Union, International Musicological Society, and several other Eastern European cultural organizations. Participants included more than 80 speakers from 22 countries — including Irena Shostakovich, widow of the Soviet Union's preeminent composer, Dmitri Shostakovich — as well as numerous Lithuanian classical and jazz musicians.
